Hot Summer in the Sun

Hot Summer in the Sun by Lewis Williams, OFS

Artwork Narrative:

On the morning of June 25, 1876, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer led his 7th Cavalry into battle with the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors along the Little Bighorn River in South Central Montana. The idyllic landscape became the final resting place for 263 soldiers in, ‘Custer’s Last Stand.’

My visit to the site coincided almost exactly with the 140th anniversary of that event. The heat was stifling, but the spirit of the place was what was overwhelming to me. A sad but peaceful presence lingered on the wind and in the sky. It’s a landscape that welcomes one to bathe in the silence and listen to the echoes of history, time and self.
