Collection: I Can't Breathe

ARTIST: Br. Mickey McGrath, OSFS

ARTWORK NARRATIVE:

“Like everyone else around the country – and the world – I was shocked and horrified to watch over and over again the hideous murder of George Floyd. As always when I encounter or experience something which cuts into my heart in a place too deep for words, I create a visual image.

It was Pentecost weekend, normally a time to celebrate the Holy Spirit breathing us into new life with fiery tongues; a time to celebrate our unity in the midst of the beautiful diversity of the human family. But I wasn’t feeling that fiery Pentecost spirit as I witnessed the painful wound of racism festering once again in our city streets in a most sadistic and frightening way.

Fortunately, this is not the end of the story. Jesus caught his breath, and continued forward, and rose from the dead and sent His spirit to each of us. Forever.”
