There are indications of Caravaggio's influence in this painting, but Saraceni presents an original and innovative interpretation of Caravaggio's language through his choice of vivid colors and novel iconography.

The recorder, violin, tambourine and musical scores in the foreground refer to the saint's patronage of music.

Her feast day is November 22.
