Collection: Tower of Mercy

ARTIST: Br. Mickey McGrath, OSFS

ARTWORK NARRATIVE:

The title of this painting refers to the image of Our Lady of Mercy in which, traditionally, Mary holds open her cape as a place of refuge for suffering humanity below. Here, two angels present her with the World Trade Center and Pentagon, each engulfed in flame and smoke.

Above Mary’s head is a star in reference to her title, “Star of the Sea,” the light which guides us safely in our darkness. Inside Mary’s cape are symbols of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Spirit is represented by the dove with an olive branch of peace in her mouth; Jesus is the Sun; and God the Creator is symbolized by the green disc beneath the sun. Around her halo are the words from the “Hail, Holy Queen”:

“To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.”

HAIL HOLY QUEEN

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope.
To Thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.
To Thee do we send up our sighs mourning
and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
Thine Eyes of Mercy toward us,
and after this our exile show us the
Blessed Fruit of thy Womb, Jesus.
Oh Clement, Oh Loving, Oh Sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us O Holy Mother of God
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
