Ecumenical Icons

Besides icons of saints formally canonized by the Catholic or Orthodox Churches, Br. Robert has used the language of Byzantine iconography to depict many other men and women whose lives have manifested Christ's commandment to love to a heroic degree. While some of these people were Christians, many others were not. They all bear witness to the boundless love of God, whose Spirit blows where it wills. He paints these icons because he is a Franciscan. Franciscans minister at the edges of society and the Church, where they often find Christ and the workings of the Holy Spirit in seemingly unlikely places.
