St. Mary Magdalene

Julie Lonneman

Artist's Narrative:
In the Gospel of Luke, the story is told of how Jesus freed Mary of Magdala from seven demons. From that moment, she traveled with Jesus and supported his mission from her own financial resources. In all three synoptic gospels, Mary leads the group of women disciples who witness Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. The faithfulness and strength of the women stands in sharp contrast to Jesus' abandonment by the male disciples. In the Gospel of John, Mary is the first to discover the empty tomb. The risen Christ sends her to announce his resurrection to the other disciples, thus prompting the early church Fathers to name her "the Apostle to the Apostles."

First Century.

Her feast day is July 22.
