Francis, one of the most beloved of all the saints, was born at Assisi in Umbria, in 1181 or 1182, and died there on October 3, 1226. Over and above his well-known spiritual legacy, Saint Francis is considered the first Italian poet by literary critics. He wrote in his local dialect instead of in Latin, believing that commoners should be able to pray in their own language.
