Monica is remembered as the mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo. She was brought up as a Christian, but her pagan husband, Patricius, was a short-tempered man who drank too much and was unfaithful to her. Furthermore, her son Augustine lived a wild and dissolute life during his youth. Through the years she persisted in patience and prayer, eventually witnessing her husband's conversion, and Augustine's baptism by St. Ambrose. In his spiritual autobiography, Confessions, Augustine recounts his mother's profound influence on his life.
